The University Grants Commission (UGC) has entrusted the National Testing Agency (NTA) with the responsibility of conducting the UGC-NET, a test that determines the eligibility of Indian nationals for the positions of ‘Assistant Professor’ and ‘Junior Research Fellowship and Assistant Professor’ in Indian universities and colleges. The UGC-NET is now being conducted by the NTA in Computer Based Test (CBT) mode since December 2018.
The eligibility for the Junior Research Fellowship (JRF) and/or Assistant Professorship is based on the candidate’s overall performance in Paper-I and Paper-II of the UGC-NET. Candidates who qualify only for Assistant Professorship are not eligible for the JRF award. Those who pass the eligibility test for Assistant Professorship are subject to the recruitment rules and regulations of the respective universities/colleges/state governments.
The UGC-NET is held twice a year, in June and December. To standardize the UGC-NET examination cycle, the NTA, with the approval of the UGC, is conducting the UGC NET December 2023 in 83 subjects at selected cities across the country.
